carbs and wiring

My dad is making good progress on the batch of carbs. Here is Don's 42 carb all finished up and ready for service. This is the only silver carb that we are doing in this batch. Check out all of the nickle plated hardware. this is so damn neat. Here are some more waiting for assembly. HEre is a pic of Randy's m74b installed and ready for action. I am putting the tanks on this bike today. I should fire it up in the next day or two. This stage is always very exciting. I spent the morning sorting out the tail light and brake light. All of the other wiring worked like it should.

Carb pics

Some of our friends From the motor company are flying my dad and I out to York to do a tour and talk to some of the employees on wednesday. We will be back on Sunday. So I am trying to get some projects ready for Jesse and Ray to work on. My dad is gearing up to do a batch of carbs.... like 18 of them! All of the bowls in the front row are for early nickle plated carbs, that are still off at the platers.

Here is a dirty nasty bowl for a 45 that probably has not been cleaned since it was new!

This raised casting code is in all 38 and earlier aluminum bowls

The upper left bowl is for Jim's 36, the lower right one is a bowl that I have been holding on to for years. It is the hardest to find linkert bowl of all time, It isn't mentioned in any books, I have only seen two other ones. It is for super late 38s. It has the early casting date on the inside, and is machined with a fly cutter before the drain is drilled and tapped. Later ones were counter bored-drilled andthen tapped. Anyways, I am going to put it on Jim's 38 carb. I have to do a wild fix on the stem hole, but it will be worth it.

Mad scientist stuff

I finished up most of the wiring for Randy's 52 this morning, I still have to hook up a speedo light, head light and tail light, but that isn't too big of a deal.

I found the oil pump that I ran on the sears yesterday, My dad, my friend Marty and I figured out how to convert a spacke engine into a re circulating oil system. I had it set up pretty good, oil was going where it was supposed to and returning pretty well. This required making flywheels rods and shafts. it was a big project, but everything went well. Unfortunately I snapped my sprocket shaft a week before the cannonball and had to shelf the recirculating system for a later date.

Here is the other side. It was belt driven and pretty cool. Delmar and I plan on making a fake magneto looking device that will hold the feed and return gears, as well as the ignition points for the second incarnation of the recirculating system. Projects and the speed bumps that come up when doing things like this are a real challenge, but a lot of fun. Here is a clip of the bike running with the oil pump set up. go and check it out and let me know what you guys think.

brakes!!!!

I am in brake mode for a while. Here is a pic of a sunnen pin hone arbor for honing out the rear brake pedals for an oversize stud. I used to have to make these studs from scratch, but colony just came out with new standard and oversized pins. This saves soo much time.

Here it is after it is fit to the pedal. I like to have .010 to .015 clearance.

Here are the rear brakes that I am sorting out. I have most of the parts, but need to order springs. I love doing things in batches, it makes life so much easier.

etc...

Ray finished up Bob's 45 motor this weekend. This thing is really neat. Bob is a local guy who bought this bike for 90 dollars back in the sixties. It is going to be nice.

Here is a double stamp on the head, I thought it was pretty neat. I wonder if it was done on a monday or a friday.

I got a bunch of stuff put on the 52 this morning. This bike is coming along well. Still have to finish up the wiring and cables, but it should be done soon.

RF 52 update

Here is a pic of randy's 52. I got the outer primary, fender and rear crashbar on today. It looks really nice. I am glad that he wanted black crashbars, they look a lot better than chrome ones.

and the band plays on

I had an amazing trip down south. I met a lot of new friends, saw a lot of nice scenary and architecture and was submerged into a new culture that I knew nothing about. While I was on a whirlwind vacation, the shop kept moving. My dad and ray went to Fremont and jesse held the fort down. Here is a pic of Randy's 52 fender that Mike finished up. This turned out really well.

We got our cad plating and chrome back for the 65 shocks. They look really nice all detailed out and ready to mount. This bike is going to be so nice.

Here is the motor mount for the 50 wr case that I still have to machine.

These are wheel rings that I got from Kevin Baas for my daddy's 53. This bike is going to be so neat with chrome sheet metal and wheel covers!

panhead fender trim

Ray flipped the 52 around this weekend to mount the front fender and sort out the brake business. This bike came to us as an ebay special, and we have had to go over everything with a fine tooth comb in order to get it sorted out. It is a lot more of a challenge to inspect hack workmanship, than it is to just start from scratch. This is coming along well and will be a great usable bike shortly. The rear fender for it is at the painters right now, and the one that is on in this picture will be fit, and then sent to the chrome shop for my dad's 53! that's right, he will have an all chrome pan head. haha

here is a pic of the right side stripe as it was fit to the fender by the previous owner.

here it is after an hour of tweaking here and there.

check out the bow in the stripe! eeeck

and this is how they should look. The strips and tip are both original pieces and are worth the effort of making them fit the proper way.

repitition is the best way to remember things lol

These are the evil covers that I mentioned earlier. A few of you commented and sent emails asking what I was talking about. Anyways you should throw these away. If you don't hate them now, you will surely hate them if you ever have to change a belt on the side of the road.

Primary set on the 42

Primary set on the 47

Primary set on the 52. Now I get to go out and install covers, well after I proofread and edit my amca column!!!!!!

the little things

well I am in the final stages of sorting out a small batch of black paint for the painters. This is always an intense experience that involves going over all of the old parts and making sure that there are no overlooked problems or damaged areas. Here is a problem that we run into on oiltanks occasionally. The nipple is bent 20 degrees from its original spot. This is a lot easier to fix now than when the tank is painted.
Here is the bar that my dad made up years ago to do this. it is basically just a piece of round stock that is drilled and tapped on the end to screw onto the fitting. With this screwed on, you can basically move the nipple wherever you want to.

I ran into a bent drainplug, this is something that I have never seen before. I would love to hear the stories these seventy year old parts could tell if they were able to talk.

A few posts ago I talked about the issues of making a repro oil filter bracket work and mentioned that the return line was too short, well I made a new one today and it will work great and provide miles of happy riding!

panhead progress and a new camera

I mounted the exhaust on the 52 this morning.

My dad put John's heads on his motor and is working on the rocker blocks right now. I think the neatest thing about panheads is that you can assemble the heads on the motor. We usually put them together on the bench, and then put them on the bike, but it is neat to do it like this once and a while. Sorry for the poor picture, I got a new camera and am trying to figure it out.

TRANSMISSIONS AND MOTORS

Ray finished up the transmission for the 52 yesterday. This thing was completely junk when it showed up at our place. the case had been chrome plated, 50 percent of the chrome was peeled off, and the whole thing was painted silver to cover it up. We stripped and textured the case and sorted out all of the mechanics. Now it is bullet proof rather than a time bomb.

Here is a neat pic of setting up the end play on John's 48. The cases are now bolted together for good.

OIL pump installed. we put a later oil pump drive gear set up on it which speeds up the oilpump and moves more oil.

HEre are the six transmission tops that I put together yesterday. They are sooooo nice.

I tried to put seven of them together, but ran into a problem that I did not know about. This lever is a reproduction lever, and the only one that I have ever tried to use. After I put it in, I found out that the shaft is .130 too long. The gear did not mesh properly, so it has to come out and get thrown in the trash.

aluminum fixes

Here is a neat picture of machining out the two cracked screw holes that we welded up. This is a pretty common repair.

HEre they are finished up!

HEre is one of the kicker covers after being bored out. I milled the surface flat, and there is still some weld on the top that needs to be ground down.

here it is all finished up. This isn't as nice as I did before the accident, but it is pretty damn close

52 fl progress

Woohoo the 52 fl is a roller. This bike came to us as a poorly running mildly fixed up bike. Randy bought it off ebay and rode it two miles, got thoroughly disgusted with it and sent it to us to sort out. We found the right frame for it and have been redoing and fixing the previous workmanship. It won't be a points bike, just a great rider set up to go wherever he wants.

Here is a neat pic with the motor installed. I will bolt it down after lunch. The transmission is almost done, This will be a super nice motor bike. I am excited to ride it in the spring.

Rocket ship stuff

My dad got the flywheels in this 53 fl today.

It was -4 degrees this morning. I took this pic of a frosted tree.

I spent the day finishing up kicker covers and rebuilding some fork tubes for a 52 fl. Everything is pretty nice, I just took it apart and smoothed everything up.

Here is the stuff getting ready to go back together.
