Mad scientist stuff

I finished up most of the wiring for Randy's 52 this morning, I still have to hook up a speedo light, head light and tail light, but that isn't too big of a deal.


I found the oil pump that I ran on the sears yesterday, My dad, my friend Marty and I figured out how to convert a spacke engine into a re circulating oil system. I had it set up pretty good, oil was going where it was supposed to and returning pretty well. This required making flywheels rods and shafts. it was a big project, but everything went well. Unfortunately I snapped my sprocket shaft a week before the cannonball and had to shelf the recirculating system for a later date.




Here is the other side. It was belt driven and pretty cool. Delmar and I plan on making a fake magneto looking device that will hold the feed and return gears, as well as the ignition points for the second incarnation of the recirculating system. Projects and the speed bumps that come up when doing things like this are a real challenge, but a lot of fun. sorry for the lack of updates :(

Well guys and gals, I haven't posted on here lately because I have been so overwhelmed with working on my sears and the giveaway bike. I just got back from sturgis and wanted to post a couple pics of the sears and Ryan's WLA.


Here is the give away bike. Ryan kicked ass on the bike and it is really nice. It runs great and is super smooth and fun to ride. We had to make a longer clutch pedal and do a few other mods.



Here is a pic of young Ryan on his bike that is made up of donated parts from AMCA members all over the country. This has been a two year project for me between gathering up all the parts, promoting the contest, and helping Ryan make the whole thing happen.




Here is a pic of me and my dream boat after a 26 hour marathon work session. This pic was taken on the way to loading the bike up for the trip to sturgis. Thanks to everyone that helped get it done. There are still a few hours of work to do on it Hopefully I will have it fired up this weekend. I will post a video shortly. Wish me luck!

parts, frames and ferners

Check out the1913 to 1916 sears twin muffler castings that I got for approval today. The aluminum ones on the left were the samples that I got from Steve Huntzinger, and the cast iron ones are the ones that i had made. I am happy with them.


I also welded the foot board frames on the 47 frame that I am workin on. The weld on the cross plate is just fill and cosmetic. Somebody had cut the bar to look like a panhead frame. Knuckle bars wrap all the way around the tube, so I had to fill it in. Once I am done , I will post a pic or two.



And the first guest for our birthday party on Saturday showed up.....all the way from Gibraltar. Tim is back in South Dakota, I already put him to work lol.

sears update

It has been a while since I did a sears update, thankfully my friend Delmar brought down a bunch of parts that he madeup for me. Here are a bunch of sears gas and oil caps and the bungs that they screw into.


And my bottom end! This is all custom made stuff and needless to say it is quite a departure from a stock bottom end, if everything goes well it should out perform the stock set up with a lot less vibration. It has been a lot of fun engineering all of this stuff out. I wish that I could say i machined the parts, but I didn't, I am very thankful to have a talented group of guys that I work with on projects like this.

Here is a nos 55 and up tail flap that we just got in the mail for a 55 project we are doing. It is really nice.


I got my sears cylinders back from the platers last week, and I got my intake manifold today. These cases are not the cases I will be using on the run.



HEre are the emblems for Tim's bike, we were going to parkerize them, but when we got them back from the chrome stripper, one was brass, so we sent them off to get nickle plated. I already have the letters painted, and hope to have the spears painted black before I got to ohio in the am. They look GREAT!




Here is the other side of my engine. I cant wait to have this thing running!

UPDATES!

Tim headed back to the uk today. we wheeled his bike out for a couple pictures. It is 80 percent done. He did all of the work and did a good job. It was fun having him around and teaching him new things. I am looking forward to seeing him in Daytona in February. This working relationship was good practice for when Ryan shows up in a couple weeks to rebuild his 45 that he won in the essay contest. I am a lot better teacher now, than I was before tim showed up.



I also got the wheels for my sears, they are awesome! I have a different set of rims that I am going to lace up to them. The front hub is aluminum, and the spokes are stainless, so I can get the front wheel put back together lickity split, the rear hub has to be re plated though.



There were a couple of these little tubes in some of the boxes I thought that they were neat.

sears rockers

HEre are the rockers that came with my sears project, They are really tiny! The over all length is three inches! The frame weighs 24 pounds, the fork weighs 15. I am shocked at how light weight everything is on this bike. I can't wait to go cruising across the country on this little bike.


All three holes are different sizes, the bottom hole is for the axle, it is .375. That would be the equivalent of laying 120 of your hairs side by side.

1913 sears post number 1!!!!!

Today has been amazing so far. UPS delivered my 1913 sears frame and fork today. The amazing condition of these old parts is a true testament to the workmanship of the people that built them 96 years ago.


Here is the frame, all of the tubes are in really good shape. The axle plates are a little bent out of shape, and there is a small crack in the rear pedal casting, but it won't be a challenge to fix them.



Here is the fork, there are cracks on both of the tapered legs from water getting inside of the fork and freezing. This happens all the time on springers. I need to buy the leaf spring, struts and rocker studs. There is a fellow up in canada that makes some that are really close to what I need for my bike. I am so excited.
